Hi so i just got a basket case of a xs1100. the frame says 9/80 so i am assuming that it is an '80. it has been sitting in the back of a garage since it was taken apart in '90 becuase it was crashed. my question is where is the best place to get an manual for it. there is a whole big pile of parts and some of them i have no idea what they are for. and some of them i do not know if i need and some that i know that i do not want, like a complete fering. any help that y'all can give me would be greatly appreciated. i cant wait to have this bike back on the road.

Welcome to the site!! If you look for a post from catatonicbug, he has a link in his signature for almost all the manuals. These are in PDF, I think.
A build date of 9/80, your bike is probably a 1981 model. The first thing you need to find out is if it's a "Standard" or a "Special". The easy way is the front forks. If the axle bolts to the bottom of the forks, you probably have a Standard. The Special has a "leading axle" front fork, the axle is bolted to the front of the forks, about 3" up.
You can also look at the first three digits of the frame and engine number. There is a link on this site that will tell you what year and model you have.Ray Matteis

Welcome to the madness of XS11 ownership!!
For the parts that are cornfusing you, feel free to post a picture of them and alot of folks here can "name that part" and even tell you what and where it goes and all.
The VIN on the neck of the bike is the most reliable way to know what model you truly have, the engine is swapped out on some. But even then, many of these bikes have had parts mixed and matched from different models to the point we refer them as "frankenbikes".Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

Welcome, these guys have you covered so far. Depending on what brand fairing you have, I might be able to take some of the parts of it off your hands, but most likely your bike has a vetter fairing.Nathan

Welcome. I too am glad we have another XS1100 lover (Maybe not lover yet, but you will be) on the west side of the country. As said before, don't hesitate to ask questions here. I don't know if there is a question about the XS11 that someone on here doesn't know. I would say that as long as you are putting it together, you might want to get you a fuse box from the guys on here, and don't forget the dielectric compound for your electrical connections. There are multiple improvements on the site, and a lot of optional ideas as well. Have fun, and don't stress yourself on this assembly. Do it right, and you will have a bike that you will enjoy for years.1980 XS1100LG Midnight

well it might take a while as it is competing with a 55 ford truck and a 12 yo daughter for time. but that also means that i have time to do it right. and being i am starting from literally the bare frame i will take my time and do it right. i am also assuming that most of the electrical will need to be replaced and if i am going to do that i will probably change some things around
thanks y'all for the info it has gotten me headed in the right direction. and i am sure that i wll be back with lots of questions.81 XS 1100 H

Wa
I can see Port Angeles WA from here across the Straight of Juan de Fuca.
San Juan Island is just around the corner from here, which is Victoria BC.
I used to know many riders from WA and OR. They are probably all a lot older than you.
Good luck with the bike.
