  • Special tank on Standard frame?

Tried a search, but didn't come up with anything.
Anyway, I am doing somewhat of a custom build on an XS1100 standard and would like to use a smaller tank.
Will the special tank fit on the standard?

Yes, but you will need the sending unit from the standard to use your fuel gauge.

The sender is on the opposit side of the tunnel so you also have to flip the sender over so it reads right.

        Thanks for the information.

Is the big difference between the special and the standard, just the cosmetics?
Or is the frame actually different?

The 'basic' frame is identical across the line, but some of the various mounting brackets that attach the cosmetics are different between the years, even for the standards.

The other major difference in the specials is the front forks; while both models have the same fork geometry, almost no parts will interchange with the standards' forks and they have the strange front brakes...

I am going to be doing something similar to you, but begining with a 78 standard frame alone, and moving all my 79 special parts to it.

Could not find a 79 special titled frame close or $$$ to ship

The tank is about 1.5 gallons smaller on the special.

I'm o.k. with the smaller tank, my butt can only handle a few hours at a time in the saddle, so stopping for gas is a good excuss to stop.
What I want to build out of my XS is like an old school HD bagger.

I found a really nice Corbin HD buddy seat. I have always liked those seats, but not a big fan of what they are mounted on!
Anyways, I think the smaller tank off from a special would work better for what I want I want to achieve.

The special tank is standard, dime a dozen. The standard tank is special...get it? I know its confusing.
Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas.

Just want a big plush seat for my big old arse!
Want a bike that will run with out a lot of work or need to be polished.
I like the big beach crusier feel of this style bike.
I just have no desire to have an actual HD murdercycle, I would rather build something for myself.
It ain't for everyone, but that is o.k.

Here is a picture of my CB750 I built. I got my inspiration from the very early Harleys, like 1903.

It has an HD fat boy solo seat on it.
I think Harley has some of the most comfortable seats, it's just what they mount them on that aren't so good!

                          Hi Bill, Nate,
I've done the other thing, swapped a Standard tank onto a Special and had to reverse the thermistor sender's direction so it'll read right.
And you gotta flip the float and rheostat fender around, not over, to have it read right.
This means it'll point it's float into the back of the tank where the tank's low ceiling won't let the float lift and say the tank is full so it won't work anyway?
Mebbe keep the thermistor sender and rig up a red light for it?
