  • pick up coils

what is the proper way to test the pick up coils. My understanding is that they should read 720 ohms but im only getting ( .736 kil ohms ) and this is testing them off the bike

if you are getting .736 kilo ohm then that would be the same as 736 ohm. Your meter is reading on the 1000 scale so it is reading in kilo (metric for 1000) ohm.

      P/U coil wire test

If you want to test those wires, it isn't that hard. Unplug the small connector at the TCI, and check these pairs of wires with an ohm meter.

      wht/red + wht/grn
      yel/grn + yel/red

      They should read 720 ohm + or - 20%.

Wiggle the wires under the ign. cover (key off) while you are checking the readings.

Any breaks should show up by a faulty fluctuating reading.

Edit: With them off the bike, test the same way.

        The p/u coils
are rarely the problem, it is the wires that have to flex in operation that fail. A static test will not give conclusive results unless the wires are manipulated when testing .
