  • OK, I admit it I HAVE THE SICKNESS!!!!!

This one came my way today, It looks to be a 79 Standard with the first Generation Tour package.
The seat must have been part of the package, It has YAMAHA on the back,
Does anyone know if I can get a seat cover like this one?
PO said he quit riding it two years ago because the starter quit working, still has the original fuse box, that will be the first thing to go.

I have a few pictures, Gas tank is as clean as a whistle inside.

Looks like the Shoe String Budget is going to get stretched again.

    Thanks, Steve

Congrats! Looks to be in Great shape.
Was the side cover in the saddlebags?

A while back, I took a seat to an auto upholstery shop where they re-worked the foam and recovered it cross stitching and all for $125.

      Yes

Yes, the side cover was in the saddle bags.
      Do you recognise this bike?

        Man, that looks familiar!
I just bought this 1978 XS last weekend.

The seat is just like the one on yours and is near perfect, but I have a different seat I am going to use.

Pm me if you are interested in it and would like pictures.

Nah, just a guess as mine were missing on the Venture when I went and looked at it. I tried to lowball him a $100 but when I opened up the saddle bags and found them, he saw them too so we settled for $50 less.

The tank/sidecovers are '78, and the tour pack looks to be a later-model setup, probably an '80. The black cylinders/engine covers aren't stock either. The early fairings were made by Pacifico, and are shaped quite a bit different. But still, a pretty complete bike and definitely something to work with...

              Alright

And so it begins, I took out the old battery and put it on the charger, it it actually taking a charge. But I went to Wally World and bought a New one anyway.
While waiting for the new battery to charge I started striping the bike of added wires the PO had on the bike, Who knows why, Anyway, as I said in the first post , the PO said he quit driving the bike two years ago because the starter quit working.
I am going to replace the fuse box anyway so I thought I would look behind it at the connectors that you guys always talk about melting together, and ta da there it was a massive cluster F@@K.
Can I loose the connectors and hard wire them together? I think I remember reading a post where someone did that.
I also hooked my portable jump start thingy possitive to the starter cable and then to ground and the starter works fine. Yes Sir!!!

Here is a terrible picture of the Cluster.

              Thanks, Steve

                Seat

A clever auto trimmer ( upholsterer ) can cover your seat.
If you were closer I would do it for you.
My XS came with a more exagerated seat than that. The metal frame was bent and rusty and the seat was no good for Mrs Snippets.
I put on a stock seat from an 81. The edges and a bit differently shaped and so is the rear where a light is placed.
I will make changes and cover it soon.

Yes it looks like a real good find in deed. It is a sickness isn't it. I guess it's easy to buy these 11s when they crop up because we know just how well built they were and how easily they can be brought back to being a useful and enjoyable bike.

Yes, you can lose the melted connector and just splice the wires together if you choose.

Never been to concerned with Stock when you can't see it.

The only issue with hard wiring it is if you need to remove the stator coils for some reason or pull the motor those being hard wired will prevent it without cutting them. That is one of the points where the engine harness disconnects from the frame harness. I would for that reason alone try to stay stock if possible.

You could also splice in 4-way flat trailer harness connectors in place of the OE shells. You'll keep the disconnectability for future needs and can pick them up cheap at any auto parts stores.
