  • tach not working

hey guys i put my bike back together and took it for a small spin in the neighborhood to see how it ran with 142.5 main jets and velocity stacks.....she ran good noticed my clutch slipped in the beginning of wot figured the cable was binding from bad routing.anyhoo to the point at hand i noticed my tach not moving. it is off an xs650 and is electronic...is there a possibility that i have the wrong wires connected to the xs1100 wiring.on the new tach there is a brown,a white, and a black wire and on the xs1100 plug in the harness the same color wires . if i understand it correctly it reads puslsations from the ac generator so can i put a test light or meter on it and check for a signal up at the gauge to see if the gauge is at fault or if not what would be the correct manner of isolating the problem

An XS650 has a cable driven tach. If it is a 650 tach, you need a cable to drive it. Likely, it's a tach off something else.

      Hi Paolo,
we've been through this before. Your light stack is XS650/750, your speedo is a US 85mph unit that could be from any of the XS series bikes and if the tach is electric and looks right it is most likely off an XS11 Special.
Check if the alternator is charging by pointing the bike at your garage door and revving the motor to see if the headlight gets brighter.
