  • float height

Hello fellows, I have a set of 80 / 81 carbs and I checked the manual that I have which is for 1978 models and the float setting seemed to be about 1 inch
from the base of the carb, however in order to achieve this setting I had to bend the tab quite a bit and there really wasn't a good spot to measure to as the float was a quite an angle.

So, did I use the wrong measurement or is this correct or is there something else amiss.

Thanks in advance for your help

If you have a Clymers manual, look in Chapter 12. It tells you all the changes for each section of the manual between the 78-79 models and the 80-81 models.

The float height changed from 25 something for the 78-79 models to 23 +/- .5 mm for the 80-81 carbs.

Note that just because your bike is a 78 or 79 the carbs may not be. One of the key things to look at is if there are two sets of Ts for the carbs, a lower set for fuel, and an upper set for venting. Those are the early model carbs. The later ones only had on set of Ts for fuel and had four holes in the inlet bell of the carbs, one is a vent.

Clymers made a book for the early xs and made a later edition for the 80-81 which included the changes for the later carbs.78-79 and 78-81. 2 different editions
