Good day one and all,
I am a new member. I recently was given an XS1100 LG Midnight Special to add to my modest collection. It is missing a few parts, and some of the gold parts have been chromed.

Most importantly, it only has 5000 km [3000 miles] on the clock and is in excellent overall condition.....it just needs some care and attention and an exhaust system.

Problem is, I am taking it to New Zealand as my daily rider [while visitng my daughter] and it must be fitted with an OEM exhaust to be imported. What I do after it is on the road is irrelevant, but therefore I need a stock exhaust system.

Can anyone help me with a used system [condition is irrelevant as Im pretty handy with a welder]????

Welcome to the site. and congrats on a nice aquisition!!

How OEM does it have to be?? As in, truly Midnight Special original or simply Yamaha, or Yamaha XS11 Special? The MNS original exhaust was black chromed and they are all but unobtanium these days.

For the original Yamaha stock exhaust system, there are two versions (that I know of) the Standard and the Special, well ok...and the XJ version so three. The standard and the special will both bolt onto the engine head, bu the mounting points at the foot pegs and lengths are not the same.

If your looking for a decent condition stock exhaust system, I might be able to help you out. One side of what I have, the left side is good to very good condition. The right side is not nearly as nice and the header pipes are actually pitted pretty good and the muffler chrome is yellowed and the under side pitted. But then, I have a header section in good condition except a crease in the no 1 pipe. So, let me know if it interest you.

Only requirement is a 'factory' exhaust system. Doesnt matter what model it's off as long as it was originally fitted to an XS11 in the factory. If you cant get an OEM exhaust, another way is to fit an exhaust that is the same dbA rating as the OEM, and it's verifiable. All vehicles coming into NZ have are subjected to a vigorous safety inspection at the border and are issued with a new VIN plate by Land Transport. As long as you can prove you can no longer get an OEM exhaust then an alternative is fine as long as it's the same spec as the OEM, but there are some different rules for temporary imports. Check the attached link for some info and browse through the linked fact sheets. Also on that site somewhere is the Vehicle Inspection Manual used by the testers that shows all the requirements and reasons for rejection. if you cant find it PM me and I'll email you a copy from my hard drive.

Im going to Auckland. My daughter teaches school there, and she is having a baby so we will be spending quite a lot of time on the Nth Island from March on, with the occasional trip down your way. I am also taking my 1980 CB750......

As noted by our friend from NZ, as long as its off an XS1100 its good to go, so that helps me considerably. Obviously I want to keep it as close to stock as possible, and dont have a problem with repairs and re-chroming or even black chroming as the bike is worth investing a few $ at least, if nothing else other than the fact that it cost the the grand sum of $0 from a friend who was going to have it crushed by the local scrap yard.....

Do you have a price for your parts? Repairs are really easy for me...Im handy with a welder and I have a good friend who repairs bike frames and rads for a living, and he can fix anything. When the Indy car race was in town in July he repaired a heap of rads for one team so he is pretty handy with a welder..........

I also recently restored a 1971 Triumph Bonnyville, and if I can get one of those running properly with all the bodged and mismatched parts that came OEM from the factory, I sure can get a set of pipes and mufflers to fit a Yamaha. I also own a 1970 XS1 I am giving a mild clean up on and will have it running before the snow flies hopefully....

Well if the decibles are important, the nicer left side has the end plate drilled out with about 6 or so 1/4-3/8" holes.

I'm 1600 k's away from Auckland but if you make it down this far you will be welcome.

Yes there are xs11's in NZ already but mostly Standards and as near as I can find out I have the only currently registered Special on the road, although it's almost retired since I bought the XJR.

Pity your not here till next year. The 4 day Burt Munro Rally is next month and its really worth attending.

Are you 100% sure that the bike, even imported must be fitted with a factory exhaust to be imported. I ask because when i first went looking for an XS1100 I gave up on importing one from the USA because I also was under the impression that it would have to meet safety and conformity criteria. I was WRONG. on bikes as old as the XS1100 the criteria does not apply because the bike is vintage. Check to make sure that you can't just bring it in as is with a normal safety before being needed before it is plated.

I have a stock set of chrome header pipes that would fit. They are the factory original 4 to 2 just like what is in the pic above but end where the muffler starts. If you had access to mufflers that matched the decibel rating that may work too. I am pretty close if ya wanted to have a look at them as well if DGXSER does not get you set up. I also have a set of Mac header pipes with no mufflers here too.

i am off to Oz to see family on Oct 23rd, wont get to the Burt Munro festival this year at least.........but I will be in Invercargill next year for certain. Aint no way I gonna hang around Auckland after my daughter has had the baby and Ive done the obligatory few visit to the hospital- thats what the father and grandmothers are for....

I do know that the import requirements for NZ are very strict, so I am going to try to get near stock pipes and mufflers, not only because I want the bike to be near stock to retain its value as much as possible, but I dont mind the look of OEM in this case.....

Rasputin: I will PM you re having a look at one of your sets of header pipes, I am sure between yourself and DG I can sort this out, as noted below.

have you balanced the cost of shipping two bikes to New Zealand and back with simply buying two bikes when you get there and selling them when you leave?
