Starter cover??

Well, it came my time for a carb rebuilt. The first time ever for the bike. Had never given me a problem besides having to synchronize them. This morning it would not idle. I could only keep it going with the choke.
While I am at it I'm gong to polish the starter covers (under carbs on left side) as that is the only crudy looking piece left. Do I have to take the whole starter out with it. Do the two covers (they look almost the same, one facing front other rear) one in front of other come out separate?
I will also do the front calipers in powdercoat and paint the rim and rotor centers. Hope to post some pictures when done.

Those are two separate pieces, they will come out separate. The back one is attached to the starter and the only way I know to remove it is to pull the starter. You could unbolt it from the starter then, but not sure I would, it is a bearing for the starter motor.

the second is a bearing for the primary shaft on the engine/transmission. the one the HYVO chain connects to.

Seems it's going to be a pita.
Think it's worth it or should I try polishing with them on?
There is still the factory clear coat turning black on them.

I'd be concerned about the bearings getting back in right and all myself. Seems like alot for a polish. I'd try it in place and see how it works out.

ive removed the front one before
to polish, it can be a little tight to
pull out but if you twist it a bit, it
will come out and ive had no problems
putting it back in.

I'll see how bad it gets. Might end up polishing in place.
