  • Cam Chain Tensioner leaking oil

I have been chasing an oil leak over the past few days,
I have isloated it to the cam chain tensioner lock bolt or the plug in the adjusters end.
After doing a search to see if there is a repair other than replacing the unit with a self adjustion unit off of a later model engine,
I have failed to find anything that could help me.
    Is there a repair?
Is there a thread that deals with this problem.

Clean it up real good and slather on the rtv to seal it up. If its coming out of the volt on the side there is a little o ring there that can be replaced, otherwise rtv or switch out to one of the auto cct's that have been found to fit.

Lots of threads on the cam chain tensioner as they do leak oil.Mine did for years until i took it off and cleaned it really good and used high temp sealant to finally stop the annoying oily mess. There is also a gasket behind there and the rubber plug at the end.

Just replace it with a self adjuster and forget it. No leaks, no more adjusting. What's not to like?

I don't know about the aouto CCT's, since I haven't gone that route, but I HAVE seen a few leaky oem ones. As Nate mentioned, there is a rubber plug (actually a metal disc, coated in rubber) that is still available from Yamaha for about $5, that presses into the end. I add a dab of RTV around the lip of the plug before installing, just to be sure. If the leak is coming from the base of the CCT, where it attaches to the case, there is a gasket in there that can also be replaced with RTV.

I was actually talking about the o ring on the side bolt that locks the tensioner

These suggestions have got you covered for the stock manual tensioner. But you will NOT regret upgrading to an automatic adjuster.

I agree that the upgrade will be the thing to do, but buying one at a sencibile price here in NewZealand is the obsticle. Yes I have watched Ebay and are aware that they are availabile at a reasonable price, I just dont have a credit card at the moment, so buying on the nett is limited.

I went and purchaced 2 o rings today, for $0, the assistant at the suppler owns a Maxima!.. the only one I know of over here in NZ.
So I have met another friend....cool,
I gave him the address for this site, so we might see him lurking sometime in the future.
Heres hoping the new o ring cures my oil leak.

That DOES put a bit of a glitch in the plans, doesn't it?

But I could sure think of WORSE places to live than New Zealand!

3 potential leak areas are the base gasket, the O Ring on the lock bolt and the plastic plug at the very front. I bought this self adjuster off ebay for $9 shipped to my door. It is off an 1987 FZR1000. I do not intend to install it anytime soon on my 79 XS1100F. It was a deal so I jumped. No one I know of has tried this one. The Venture and V Max tensioner is tried and true but I have yet to get one of those. I will say this one fully extended out is the same as an OEM XS unit.
