  • special gauge wiring on standard

well i mounted some xs1100 special gauges on my standard xs1100.at least i think they are. anyhoo my question is was yamahas color coding of wires pretty consistent that i should be able to match up color to color except for obviously the fuel gauge/warning light. i want to install neww connectors as the gauge coonnectors from special do not match the standard ones and wires are grouped different so i wanted to separate and put new connectors to avoid single wire to wire plug in. i hope i didn't make this inquiry confusing.i will be installing a new 7" bnlack round headlight i got from speedmotoco on the bike as well and the ignition will be wired on a rocker switch hidden on the bike as i do not want an ignition key and since the bike is meant for just weekend riding and some fun time i am not concerned with theft of it.on the upside i installed my new seat i got from ebay. well not brandnew but new used seat. i will take a pic as soon as i get a chance.

The wiring colors are shown in the diagram in the back of the manual. You can look at the 2 versions to determine how similar they are.

ya i"m gonna have to make some custom side covers to paint.... i"m thinking of incorporating some black metal mesh insert in the side cover with an orange border.... i think i'm going to take the grab bar off and paint it either black or orange and black engine guards. still haven't come up with a brake ligh that goes good....i don't have the factory one as it was damaged beyond repair and i want to cover up the factory mounting holes so i could use some suggestions there if anyone wants to shoot it my way.... for now i just going to plug away at rewiring the gauges.....

I put a set of special gauges on my 78e, along with a special tank too.
I just blew up both electric charts and match em up. Everything works, the low fuel light even lights up just before reserve is needed. I'm going to do it again on the 1200 as soon as I get a round toit.

                Hi Paolo,
How about you put red lenses and dual filament bulbs in the rear flashers?
Rig the lamps to be stop/tail/signal with a ~$20 NAPA 6-way to 4-way trailer light conversion.
Then all you'll need on the rear fender is the illuminated number plate mount off an '80 or later Special.
