no headlight turn lights, horn

after mucking around with trying to exchange aftermarket turn signals with with stock ones i am now without headlight, turn signals, horn, instrument lights etc etc.

fuses look okay.

any thoughts?

If you have the original glass type fuse box, they can cause all sorts of problems. The clips don't make good contact and glass fuses can appear OK, but be broken inside toward the end. You are best off replacing it with a blade type fusebox. Member TopcatGr58 sells them for $12, IIRC. If you have an 80-81 model XS, the main fuse is in a seperate holder behind the left side cover.

Most of what your speaking to has to do with the left hand switch. Are all the connectors plugged in tight? There is alot of wires up in that headlight bucket, are you sure you go them all back in correct? JAT

I'd open up that left handlebar switch housing and be sure everything is clean and still soldered together in there. Might not be the actual problem, but that switch is a known point of failure, and it would be a good idea to be sure everything in there is solid.

for the info about the lefthand control switches. I suspect that is where my woes lie. It feels a bit 'fragile'.

i'll take a look in there and get a replacement if things look off.

thanks too for the recommendation about replacing the fuse array.

this bike is going to be really fun to get up and fully running. one redeeming thing ..... it starts first time, every time and roars. fortunately the neighbours are keen to go for a ride on it. no one else has a bike around here.
