Geeezzz....someone really mashed the crap out of those gears some how. That is a shame for sure.

You will need to split the cases to get the main shaft out, but, the good news is, you do not have to pull the head or the jugs to do it. There are bolts you need to pull form the top and the bottom (after the oil pan is off, which you already did) to pull the bottom case off. Also, you can inspect your crank bearings while your there.

Your going to want to find the bolt to pull that rotor off to. Its a special tool or a certain custom bolt I believe and bit of a PITA.

      Yes Dg

I hate to say it DG but..... this project has become a bigpita! The bike had an old license plate on it when I bought it. This bike had only been on the road for 4 years. But it must have been 4 hard years on the tranny. Can this split be done with it upside down like it is now or what?

Sorry to hear that... It's not usually that nasty in there! However, the only gasket you need is the Head gasket. ALL other gaskets (besides the float bowl, exhaust, and petcock gaskets) can be replaced with RTV. My favorite is the stuff in a can called "The Right Stuff".

Hey Bug, he wont need the head gasket or the cylinders. All that can stay on. Just all the normal gaskets used in the dremel fix, and some yamabond or similar for sealing the cases back together. And perhaps something for the breather cap as it has to come off to get the bolts underneath it.

              Brcree,
You will want it back on the wheels to pull the engine out IMHO. Although you will be putting the engine back over on the head and valve cover eventually to pull the bottom case off. Unless someone has tried it and knows how to get it out upside down, but that sounds like an accident just waiting to happen to me. I guess the more I think on it, it might work out to pull it upside down. just never done it so not sure how you would strap it and support it. I will say that a furniture doly works REALLY well for rolling it around in the garage after it is out!! (Thank you Mr. Dbeardslee!!)

I was really hoping it was total overkill to send you both shafts of gears and the shift forks and drum. But you might find it is ALL worth swapping while your in there and have it that far apart.

Yeah, I knew that. I was just making a general statement that actual "gaskets" are not needed anywhere on the bike, except for those 4 particular locations.

Actually you missed one other set. The exhaust gaskets cannot be replaced with RTV. Personally, I have been using Yamabond for all of those areas (the ones that can be RTV'd) and have had really good luck with it. I'll have to switch to the black Yamabond with my next engine since it's all done up in black, and I plan on leaving it that way, except for the edges of the fins that will be brightwork kinda like a midnight, only I'm not going to try and do any of the rest of the bike even remotely like that. I kinda prefer the color changing effect I have now, which they had it in high temp, I'd do the engine in that too.
