  • valve guide seals or rings

This xs I am working on smokes, wont smoke while just setting there ideling, dont know much about the bike got it from karla and it use to belong to Charley Hause frend of Bob Jones, got ahold of him and he did not rember witch bike it was, gess he and bob traded alot, any way it will not smoke when you first start it like valve guide seals do, if i hold the revs up about 3 to 5000 it will start smoking white smoke, have not checked the compression yet, the thing runs like a scaled dog out on the road, it is a 79 standard with 80 carbs on it right now untill i get the 79 carbs rebuilt. it might be a little rich could this be washing down the cylinders and causeing it to smoke ?

I am guessing its with the rings and not with the valve guides or seals.

I kinda of have the same problem right now. I pulled the head and put in new valve guides and seals and pulled the jugs off and checked all the rings and they were all still good. Cleaned out the oil holes on the piston skirt and put everything back together. Still smokes so this winter I am going to put new rings in her.

In addition, if it sat for a while the rings might be stuck. I'd try putting some marvel mystery oil down the plug holes and let it sit for a couple of days and then spin it over a bit before putting the plugs back in and then ride it some. The rings may free up that way and fix the problem. I'd also just watch the oil consumption and ride it a bit. Both my engines started out smoking and after a bit it stopped (along with most of the oil consumption). On my current engine I find that the 15w40 diesel oil causes oil consumption and smoking, but 20w50 MC specific by Castrol doesn't use hardly any and doesn't smoke. I don't know why that is, but I'm gonna keep using that, especially since it's only about 75 cents a quart more, and I only have to buy 3 liters (yep, comes in liter bottles) for an oil change (even if I don't change the filter I pull it off and empty it out as part of the change process).

Check the crankcase level (on the centerstand of course), an overfilled case, whether due to overfilling or fuel leakage into the case, will cause exactly the symptom you describe. If its running like a purse snatcher, then the compression rings are fine, but the oil control ring set(s) being siezed can also cause this, but would generally appear on one side or the other as it is unlikely that all four oil ring sets would sieze and none of the compression rings would. An overfilled case would affect all four cylinders. Just food for thought...

Also, If you do fall back on the oil rings as being suspect number one, they are likely to free up with use Good luck!

It took almost 3k miles before mine stopped smoking, and that was with daily riding (and I do mean daily, as in EVERY day) for about 3 months.
