  • bypassing octopus fuel setup

Is there a good and easy way to eliminate that crazy fuel set up. I just purchased a 80 XS1100SG and mine is missing that set up. I have never seen such a set up before. From Yamaha its 90.00 plus bucks.

Block off the front nipple on the petcocks and then just run the rear nipple to the carbs. Just make sure all the vacuum nipples on the carb boots are covered.

As you may know, the purpose of the valve is to stop fuel flwo when the engine is not running. Its an additional safety or a way to keep from having to turn the petcocks on and off each time you get on and off the bike.

If you do a search on fuel line routing I am certain you will find ALOT of ways folks have rerouted the lines to eliminate that beast.

        Hi vint' and welcome,
FWIW, I wouldn't fit one of those 9-hose wonders if it came for free.
Like they said, block off the gas tap front spigots and make sure the carb manifold vacuum tap that worked the octo is capped off like the other 3.
NOT the vacuum tap from the #2 carb body! That one works the ignition advance and needs to be there.
The easiest fuel line run is from left tap to right carb tee & vice-versa.
This gives more room to fit in-line fuel filters if you want to.
You will have to open both taps to run the bike this way but T-ing in a cross tube to allow one tap to feed all 4 carbs adds complication.
And remember to turn the taps off when you park, just like grandpa did on his Norton.

Once again I am hearing from some the multi billion dollar Co. Yamaha, didn't know what they were doing 1st, if you look at the octy for fuel flow, it is simple to understand. 2 lines from the petcock "on" to the octy for on (RUN). 2 lines out of the octy valve that alow fuel to flow to all 4 carbs "only" when bike is running (thus the vacume line to the octy from one carb to open or close the valve). The other two lines "T" into the fuel flow from the octy to the carb lines as a way to by-pass the octy valve when needed (like 1st start after storage or carb rebuild) It only looks complacated, it is just a check valve that can save you from turning off and on petcocks (and save your motor if the needles leak) You can find them on ebay for $10.00 with the lines attached) best to look for someone parting out a whole bike, most don't list the octy sep. but will sell/ship for a few bucks). most comlet petcock set rebuild kits come with the dieframe for the octy, good luck anyway you chose to go

              Hi 4ME,
of course they knew what they were doing but their motivation was different.
They wanted to not be sued by people too stupid to turn their gas off when they parked.
Current owners want their fuel run to follow the KISS principle and have 2 hoses instead of 8 hoses, 2 tees and a vacuum line.
And if you are too stupid to turn your gas off you shouldn't be riding.

                Hey OEM,

I get you are stuck on stock, stock, stock. And in general I agree, the bike runs like a raped ape with the air box and the stock exhaust so I see no need to change that myself. But I do love the results of the 750/850 swap, the upgrade fuse box, and yes....removing the Octy.

I have owned two XS11 Specials now. and on both I tried to have it setup with the Octy. Both came with one in place. First one only ran with petcocks in Prime, and trying to fix it and keep fuel from leaking was a difficulty at best. So I dumped it.

Second one, I rebuilt it with the petcocks, put it in place, then tried to turn my tank around and just run prime to synch and tune. Fuel poured out the unconnected lines all over the place. Drove me nuts, so it was sent out to a member who likes them.

If you like it and want it, then run it. Same for any other member who likes it. But no need to disrespect those who do not, or act like they are fools or idiots. They just do not share your opinion on a subject that is very opinion oriented.

Sorry if you took it that way, most of my "Yamaha" thought comes from me getting attack for my OEM views. I did end with "good luck anyway you chose to go"

It is your bike, do as you see fit, and yes, I am one of those "dumb" riders that forgot to turn off the petcock a time or two on bikes without the octy, maybe it is because I am one of the stupid ones that have done that, that makes me like the safty valve so much, a true "sorry" from a fellow XS lover that has been saved by a device that I champion when I can, please don't take my vigor as an insult to all who feel otherwise

My 79 set outside and suffered the weather. It's destined to be a bobber when finished but I'm keeping the stock tank. I'm welding in two 90 degree barbs to tie the tanks together so only 1 petcock needed.
I grew up on dirt bikes so shutting the gas off is second nature to me.
This forum is great. I printed off a wiring diagram today since my harness was junk.

To the carb fuel inlet. There are 2 #20 on the diagram. One goes to each side of the carb bank.
