  • Bringing back an 80 Special

Last weekend I went to pick up the bike Russ offered here in the bike's section.
    Thanks again Russ much appreciated.

It was a fun road trip. I ended up using a wells Cargo motorcycle trailer the previous owner of my 79F loaned me. No complaints about this P.O.
I did have to rig my Jeep for towing. It was somthing I been wanting to do just needed a good reason to do it.

    Here is the reason:

Mostly all there has sat out side awhile so lots of penetrating oil, heating up bolts and drilling and taping.

It will be a challenge but; there is no rush since my F is running like a top.
    That's all for now.

        I found it right here:

        http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30077

It was up a day or so I guess I was close enough to get it.
I missed the $50.00 Bob Jones bikes too far away. This made up for it tho.
I look through ebay as well haven't had much luck.
        Keep on the lookout.
I'm greatfull and do feel lucky to have gotten it.

Is that YOUR wall it fell into, or was that back at Russ's place?

Looks like a nice find, especially for free! Add a seat, sidecover and a mirror, and you're all set! Can't wait to see it shined up and back on the road!

Luckily it was my place. went to put the bike on the center stand and it imploded.

Well I'll put up some peg board it will give me a place to hang parts too.

Dang you.......I mean Congrats on it Rick!!

Worst part is I happen to have a seat , and a right side cover, and possibly a stock exhaust...Oh well. Timing can be such a cruel temptrest!!

I would definitely look into the covers for the swing arm bolts to keep crap out of there and clean and regrease those as well.

Great to see another one saved and heading for the road!!

Thanks I'll keep the parts in mind. Right now I'm PB blastering it since it sat outside. It already has broken exhaust studs on #4 and I snaped the spark plug in #3. I'm going to start with a good inspection of the frame since; the right centerstand mount broke off. I was thinking of the seat that XS11Lover has on his really looks cool.

With family, work and having a strong runner, I estimate this to be a two winter project.

I think My first order of business is to get my welder working. I moved here 6 years ago and have to run wires from on side of the house to the other through a finished basement.

                    I'll keep you guys posted

Frozen bolts seem to be a common problem on bikes stored outside in NH.

Thanks Phil. I needed the battery box the gray part that the foot pegs get mounted, swing arm covers and the octy.
So I thought it was worth $36.00 with the shipping.

                              Started tearing into it

                              Carbs and Tank were okay.
Have some rust issues to deal with. Will be wire brushing and painting alot.

Main issue at this time really stuck #2 piston.

I'm currently stripping the bike so I could pull the engine to better work on the stuck piston.

A spare engine came with the bike hoping the jugs can be used from it.
Has anyone replaced a sleeve only?
I was thinking of heating the cylinder with a torch and try to tap out the sleeve.
                              wish me luck
