  • XS1100 Historical Problems

I am looking to get a larger bike (current XJ750Maxum) and am interested in a 1980 XS1100.

What kind of historical problems/ solutions has the bike had?

Expected mileage the engine is good for?
    Engine problems?
    Handling problems?
    Electrical problems?
    Etc.

    Thanks for any input.

      Electrical...
Fuse box must be replaced... original one sux
Ignition coil - plug cables sometimes rot, you can find a replacement tip on this page
If its dying for no apparent reason, clean the killswitch
Pick up coil wires (the ones that flex) sometimes brake inside insulation, theres a replacement tip on this page.

      Handling...
Get a fork brace and a nice set of tires. Newer shocks and springs help, but not necessary.

      Engine:
2nd gear... black n decker fix. You can find it on this page... where else. A bit of hassle, but no biggie cashwise.
Leaky camchain tensioners... simple to fix.
If you want the big bore kit (1200), wiseco has them for bout 400$.

Other than that... carb cleaning and syncing, petcocks cleaning, regular stuff.

      Check out the tech tips.

If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.
