wat up guys i need some help. i got a 1980 xs1100 bobber and i think my carbs might be screwed up. it will idle fine but when i take off to go it seems to sputter out and i have to pretty much keep it full throttle to get anywhere and it sounds like it misses bad when i get on it like that. i have heard i need new diaphrams which might make since seeing how there is silicone on them apparently. ive also heard that one of my needles might had been clogged up which would also make since seeing how it ran ****ty for like a month then all of the sudden it ran right on for like two days but then started missing again. im totally confused somebody help me out so i can ride again before the end of time!

You need a thread of hope!!!
Namely the thread on Carb Cleaning 101!!! Do a search on "carb Cleaning 101" and you will find complete details on how to disassemble, inspect, clean , clean some more, and then clean some more, and THEN reassemble the carbs.
If they were that dirty in there, then there is no substitute for tearing them down and cleaning them up. Anything less and your just chasing deamons.
If indeed you do need new diaphrams, they can be purchased. Parts N More has the ones for the 80-81 model carbs for $64 each.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Yep. Clean the carbs. Don't focus on the diaphragms until you get in there and look at them though. Spend a good 2 hours, 2 cans of carb cleaner spray and a bit of compressed air, and you'll be glad you did.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.

For sure you need to clean them out first. after that then you can see better what might be going on.Nathan

Don't forget to check the pick up coil wires. They can lead to a myriad of symptoms one of which you are describing.2-79 XS1100 SF
