Hey guys, I'm about to purchase my first Yamaha this coming weekend. Hopefully on Saturday I will be picking up a 1979 XS1100 project bike. I have been a Honda guy most of my life, so this will be a new experience for me. I'm not new to bikes, just new to Yamahas, so I will be looking this site over to find out what I can and cannot do. The sky's the limit with this one, I'm going to go ground-up on the rebuild and add my own touches along the way.

What's the deal with the butt-ugly tank on this bike???

Sounds like you have a standard. Seems lots of guys want to dutch that tank like the fat girl on prom night. Personally I just traded my special tank for a standard tank. You will like it though when realize how much longer those 2 extra gallons let you ride.

Welcome and have fun with her!

        Welcome aboard gui_tarxan!

I too started out with Hondas. You will greatly enjoy the Yamaha experience. All the help that you will need can be found here within the site or from the great knowlege base within the members.

For those who do not know, "Butt ugly" is a term of endearment refering to the 78-79 GL1000.

            Actual capacity beats percieved elegance.

            Hi Nate,
unless you managed to find a 6 gallon Euro-tank you only got ~1.4 US gallons extra capacity by installing a Standard tank onto your Special.
However, any time a person sees some poor bastard struggling to push his 600lb out-of-gas Special to a filling station they'll realize the true beauty of their Standard tank.

And good luck for anyone trying to find the euro tank!

I'd love a Euro tank. But I'd settle right now for a good condition standard tank that I can put the proper time into so the paint job pops. Being that my XS is my daily ride, and that the riding season in this part of Ca is pretty much all year, I need a second tank to do this right. I have a second tank, but it's on the bike and then I discovered just how bad my original tank was . No way that rusted out piece of crap is going back on the bike to sit between my legs. I may not plan on fathering any more children at this point in my life, but I don't want to lose the equipment to a rusty leaky tank either.
