  • fuse box-where to get a GOOD one?

Hi.new member.First post.I have had this bike 6 months and am completely sold on it.79 XS11 which was sold to me by someone who had it for a long time and really did not want to let it go.He just rebuilt the top end and had it upped to 1179cc.Somewhere on my first major ride, around 100 the right side cover blew off.Hours of looking,Not to be found. The cover from my '80 parts bike did not fit.Oh well lets ride! (months later and much rain later)...after a nice day riding,I park it and go to start it a few hrs later...cranking,no spark.
...no manual...many hrs later....tried 2nd computer, ballast reads 1.5ohm..battery is new and 12.4 volts...getting current to coils...tested resist of coil p/u at connector to computer 720 ohm grnd/orange...no other readings...took out p/u from '80 and got 720 ohm again only got reading at black / orange...tried to get juice across fuses, the main feels hot ,but I cant get current across fuse or even wire to wire, headlight fuse not hot but same no current, signal fuse I can get test light lit,but press on it and my neut light and red light go out.no matter what I do I cant find current at the ignition fuse or wires going to it.I have to believe my fuse block is a big part of this problem.I would like to replace it with a good fuse panel and blades.where should I get it? what else should I know or look for ? any feedback is very appreciated...the leaves are falling and I gotta get out there.

Yep, the fuse box is a well noted failure prone component. Look under the tech tips and you will see one on replacing the fuse box. One of the mods here TopCat or TC for short buys them in bulk and resells to the members. It is a very nice upgrade and easy to install. He is out and about on vacation right now, but send him a PM and he will get you hooked up.

Welcome to the forum! Download a manual from the link in my signature. TC's fuse block is definitely the way to go. $11 shipped, and you just add fuses. Be sure to go through all the electrical connections (especially the ground points) and clean them really well. Corrosion is NOT your friend. Even the ignition switch can get filled up with gunk, so you can take it apart and clean out the bug nests. Be sure to post some pictures so we can see your new ride!

          Hi and welcome to CH11.

T.C.'s fuse box is a great replacement for the factory one. Here is the link to the tech tip. http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14052.

If you don' want to wait for TC to get back from vacation, and mail you one (after you mail him the payment), I bought mine from NAPA, P/N 785136. That along with a blister pack of female 1/4" female spade connectors (right angle preferred but not required) and some fuses, and you'll be riding tonite!

              Hi '79 and welcome,
either TC's fuseblock or the NAPA one is a great upgrade.
The '79 side panel has slots at the top while the '80 side panel has a hole and a slotted hole.
Mr. Dremel is your friend here to convert either into other.
I pop-riveted a 22ga aluminum reinforcing strip into my '79 sidecover before Dremel-converting it to fit my '80. It's been on the bike 5 years and it ain't fallen off yet.

Special or standard? If it's a special, and the 80 parts bike is a standard then as Fred says it's just modifying the slots. If it's a special I'm not sure, but a 79 special and 80 standard use the same side covers with the mounting holes at the top being different.
