  • xj motor to a xs frame

Does any know if an xj 1200 motor will bolt up to a xs 1100 frame ?

  • #2
Is it an XJ1100 motor that was bored out to be 1200? I am not familiar enough to know if there was an XJ1200 that was a different "block" than the XS1100.

I know the XJ1100 engine is almost a 100% match to the XS1100. Only differences are the alternator, the oil level sensor instead fo a pressure switch, and maybe a couple other minor electrical items like that. But they do interchange as far as bolting into the frame.

That really is a very vague question. If it is in fact an XJ that has been bored to a 1200 as stated before(since none were ever factory produced) and all you are asking is will it BOLT up then that is an absolute yes. But again as stated it will not quite be Plug and Play

Xj motor into a xs frame

Thanks Bikerphil and Dgxer for your replys, the reason I ask is that I have a chance to purchase a Xj 1200 out of a mini modified race car that is lightly modified and said to be reliable and powerful so know that I know it will fit
I think I will pick it up. I know that it is chain drive and thats ok too.

Better make sure the motor isn't an FJ1200 which won't bolt up. That's the motor they use in the mini racecars and is chain drive. The XJ motor is shaft.

The head and cam cover are quite different, if you look at the side views.

Doesn't help that both the XJ and FJ were sold in '82. Even if it is an XJ, the troubles are many to swap into the XS 11 frame. Mechanically it will bolt in, but there are differences in ignition, wiring, some carburation issues (cable vs mechanical choke) that would need to be overcome. Can be done, but it is not a bolt-and-go operation.

And except for the YICS ports, if you swapped the carbs and ignition stuff from your XS motor the only tough part would be the charging system, and frankly I understand that's not that hard to deal with. For that matter, you could probably put the XJ ignition stuff onto the XS but that would require more parts.
