is anyone out there running their xs without their tach hooked up and if so have they experienced any problems?

The tach is certainly not required for operation. I wouldn't try to do a carb sync or tuneup without one, but it doesn't have to be the built in one, and actually would be better off with an external one that is more accurate anyways. Don't have to have a speedo on there either, but I kinda like having both. As a matter of fact, that's another one of the things I don't like about the cruisers, no tach, even though they don't rev high, I like to be ablet to look and see that I'm not outside of the RPM range I want to stay in, even if I can typically tell by ear.

Shouldnt cause any problems, Why do you ask?

Something to remember if your running without one. The tach is driven off one leg of the alternator output and serves as a good early warning fault indicator if your alternator stops working, which can save you being caught out in the middle of nowhere when your battery goes flat and the TCI stops running the ignition system.

My original tach went haywire one day and i removed it and didn't use one for years and had no problems without it.When i met Randy and told him i didn't have a tach he suggested i get one, and purchased one from E-Bay as i wanted to keep the bike somewhat stock. It also helps if you ride at night because there is some extra light in the speedo/tach area.

IIRC, the self cancelling turn signal feature uses the tach as its operating method. Not sure, but disconnecting it might cause that feature to not function.

Nope, turns works off a reed switch in the speedo...
