    Will this Harley muffler work?

I got a decent deal on these Harley mufflers, but they have a little opening (circled in red) on them. I suppose these won't work because of this?

Looks to me like a cross-over pipe! I'd say to connect the cross-overs and see how they work.

      Holes in pipes

I'm pretty sure those holes are for a crossover type connection between the two pipes. I don't see why you couldn't use the pipes if you sealed those "holes", but it might be more cost effective to get some slip on mufflers that didn't require modification.

Why seal the holes? The OEM pipes have a crossover, why not use them, and connect them together?

Guess depends on location of cross-over in relationship to the center stand......if no interference, I would utilize the cross-over using a new pipe welded to one side or the other and sized to fit OVER other side with one of the small off-set muffler/pipe clamps. The cross-over is the balance tube and helps with scavengeing of exhaust.

Got yourself a set of '04-up Sportster mufflers there... yes, that hole is for a crossover, and do give thought to using it. It's worth 3-5 hp on the Sporty, and probably the same or more for you. After all, Yamaha went to the trouble to do a crossover on all the stock bikes...

I have used those a few times on the old 1000 and 1100 gold wings, take a
1 3/4" o.d. exhaust pipe slip int the inlet, that will bring the I.D. of the pipe down to 1 5/8" wich i beleave is the O.D. of the stock exhaust of the XS, first cut the crossover pipe off and then just slip the muffle on the stock exhaust and clamp on and you are good to go, you can weld the pice of pipe in the muffler but you may have to grind the inside out so it will slip over the xs exhaust pipe. Dont know what model those pipes come off of but some times harley would have cat converters on one side and not the outher, you need to check that out, I dont use the ones with the cat converter in them only the ones without the converter, hope this helps.

Why do you not use the cat type? The spacing through the cat looks like it might plug if your engine uses a lot of oil, and the oil got coked on the front of the cat. Is there another reason? CZ
