  • Key Question?

So I am trying to get my gas tank and ignition keyed the same but I noticed that the gas tank and the ignition key are milled opposite of each other. The landings and the grooves are mirror opposites of each other. I am wondering if the special keys are milled opposite of the standard keys. And if that is the case does anyone have an extra standard lock cylinder that they would part with or trade for a special lock cylinder so I can have just one freakin key!

And yes the picture is actually of the same key just digitally flipped, it was just easier than getting my other key and taking a picture of it as well.

I believe you can take the tumblers out of the cap lock, so it will open with any key.

If you take the cylinder out then the latch does not work.

Removing the tumblers only works if the key will fit in the slot to begin with. Being opposite like that it will not even go into the lock cylinder.

The only option I can think of is to find soemone with a scrap gas cap with the same slotted key as your ignition and exchange the cylinders with them. You may try your local MC boneyard to see what they might have.

Ran into the same thing on Banshee, so after I wrecked the other bike, I took all the key parts and put them into Banshee so all the keys match 100%. I thought perhaps the difference was due to the PO swapping Zuki parts into the thing. He aparently had a scrap zuki sittign around cause 50% of the crap I yanked and tossed were zuki parts.

Mine was an 81 special. I still have the gas tank with the locking cap, and the key switch. Both use the same key. Would be willing to sell them if you want them.

            Hi nate,
not the complete cylinder, just take the guts out and put the cylinder back in.
And like DGSER sez, even that won't work because the key is handed wrong so file the wiggles out of the key slot.
With the wards removed and the keyslot filed you can open the tank with the ignition key.
Or a screwdriver if you have to but so can anyone else.
BTW, my two keys are opposite hand but have identical ward patterns.
I've learned to live with it.
