  • Snap Ring Removal

...so when you want to change the position of the clip on the main jet, how the heck do you get the snap ring out? Every pair of snap ring pliers I've seen is too big to fit down in the slide to get to it. Is there a special tool for this, or a supplier of specialty tools you guys use to get the proper pliers?

My XS is a '79 Special, if you need that info. Thanks for the help guys!

...obviously I need a Kawasaki of some sort.

I for myself a cheap snap ring pliers and ground it down on the sides so that it fit. Miles cd sells a long reach pliers that supposedly works as well.

I believe he meant Mikes XS. I have also used a couple small diameter rat tail files, using the round pointy end to put into the snap ring holes.

If you have a set of 'interchangable tip' snap ring pliers, pick up a couple of single allen wrenches that fit the pliers, cut off the 'L', grind/file a tip on them and you now have a set of 'long reach' pliers...

        Cost you under .50....
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Why not just unscrew the cover plate and pull the needle out. Then push the snap-ring off with a screwdriver, and slide it back on in the location you want it. Slide the needle back into place, and screw the cover plate back on...

My older style set of carbs has the snap ring and not the cover plate that the newer style have. They can be a real pain in the hoo-hoo.
I just took an old set of needle nose pliers and ground the tips to fit in the snap ring holes. Works great. Of course it is now a specialty tool but it works on the brake snap rings and other stuff so that is not so bad.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I cut the sides off my convertible pliers, making them an inside snap ring only set, and it fit. Now it's time to start the painful process of remove carbs, remove tops and change clip position, reinstall tops, reinstall carbs, test ride, rinse, repeat...

You can pull the needles without removing the carbs.
