"What they do have is an implacable, unrelenting presence and movement that bespeaks massive power lurking behind paint and chrome. They don't wail like a screeching ninja, the don't rumble like a harley. They just growl like a spactic, stressed out badger waiting to rip your face off and eat your soul." Trainzz~RIP~ -
Maybe it's my age, but I stopped reading for a moment when I got to that part of the message because red flags started going up. I've been riding for over 30 years and I would never, ever take a bike to the strip that I was "not completely comfortable with". It's sort of like giving a ten year old (not saying you're like a ten year old!!!) an AR-15 and a full magazine and saying shoot away! It's not like a car where you have a huge margin of safety simply because of the body shell, if you wreck a bike you generally get hurt.
How much experience do you have with high speed runs? Have you practiced take-offs in a safe parking lot? How about short bursts of speed on the road from slower speeds or a 0-60mph at different acceleration rates? If you have, have you also practiced slowing down from those speeds? What about shutting down early if something goes wrong? How good are the brakes on your bike? The tires?
I love racing, especially drag, but please do it safely.Jim...<><

Shift
Yes, 8500 hp curve means shift from 1st to 2nd at 8500 rpm, next 2nd to 3rd at just over 8000 and 3rd to 4th at just over 7000 rpm ( due to the max torque of 66.5 lb-ft at 6500 rpm) and if track alows, hit 5th at just over 6500. The hp will get you moving, the torq will keep it pulling. Not a fan of burning up the clutch with 5000 rpm slipping clutch take off moves. You should hit the torq start of power band at 4000 rpm and clutch should be fully released as soon as you are moving, little tire spin, good hook-up and front tire in the air about 6 inch. for the 1st sec. JIMHO, but I have done some qtr miles in sub 11 sec times more then once, bikes and car's included

There is no way you should ever see 5th on the strip. Even 4th gear is goind to be brief.'81 XS1100 SH

Strip?
Ever hear of Bonneville and other tracks dumb a$$, he did not say what kind of track or strip he was running that is why I said "and if track alows, hit 5th at just over 6500" That is what "if track alows" means, going longer then QTR mile

I have heard of Bonneville. I have never heard it referred to as a dragstrip. And I would appreciate not being referred to as a dumb-anything again. Thank you.I only put on 2500 miles on my bike since I bought it a couple months ago so I am not completely comfortable with it yet. I would like to take it to a dragstrip and see what she has, but not sure what the best launching technique is. I am just curious to hear how you all are launching these bikes in this senario. I know every bike runs a little different but I would like to hear anyway.'81 XS1100 SH
