  • Gearbox problem

I just bought a 82 XJ1100 that had been sitting for awhile.
Has 52,300 km on it. I have a receipt that shows the top end was completely rebuilt at 52,000(that was in 2003). Took it in and had carbs done and tuned up. My problem is that it pops out of first gear when i am accelerating, 2ng gear and up seem to be fine. Any idea what might be causing it. Shop rates here are $90 an hour.

Oh yeah, you have the common first gear problem. Thats going to require some wrench time. Hope you can manage yourself, it could get costly if your taking it to a shop and chances are that they have no better idea on fixing it than you do. So... if you have the tools or can borrow the tools then buckle up and get ready for a dremel fix. Even if you dont have all the tools you can take some of the money the shop would charge ya and buy a few tools and still make out ahead.

It should be pointed out that new, improved gears (already machined very much like the 'fix' as Yamaha belatedly recognized the problem) are still available, but at roughly $100 a pop aren't a cheap fix.

And even if 1st gear is the only one giving you problems, you really should do them all while you're in there...

I bought all new gears for mine not terribly long ago. The dogs are straight. I'll put them in with the "washer move".
