  • Timing INDICATOR plate re install

I removed the indicator plate to repair a pick up wire. I did not pay attention to the indexing of the indicator plate and dont know how it goes back on! I assumed it would be doweled or something but I can install it 2 ways. Do I need to put CYL 1 at TDC and then install the indicator plate so the pointer points at "T"? I did read all 16 pages that came up from my search but I did not see the indicator plate addressed.

The plate will fit better one way than the other, it has a slight offset if you look closely. After installing, run the motor and double check to make sure it spins evenly.

If it runs you can put a timing light on it, that should tell if its right or not

I found its easiest to put the bolt through the plate and then put the plate on. It SHOULD only sit down flush on the shaft one way. Now it has happened apparently with some peoples plates that they will fit on both ways so then you need to use the timing light.

OK it will fit PERFECTLY in 2 positions. It slides across the keyway freely and evenly. I can borrow a timing light. What do I do? Connect the light to cyl #1- What mark do I chalk on the indicator plate?

Put the plate on and tighten it down. Take the #1 spark plug out and spin the crank while holding your thumb over the plug hole to find the compression stroke. When you feel the pressure, continue rotating the crank until the piston is at TDC. Use somthing like a soda straw to make sure it's all the way up. Either your timing plate will read correct or 180 degrees off.

Take the plug out of cylinder #1 and confirm that the piston is at the top of its stroke with a screw driver. With that done install the plate with the markings on the plate at the pointer. Every time the piston is at the top those marks are at the pointer.

That's a way easier way to do it. Never thought of it.

Yep, guess there's no real need to find the compression stroke for this.
