Scott, you appear to be a very wise man!! The black connector with the wires that complete the high and low beam is acting up. I can tug and pull on it and move it around and the low beam will come and go.

I pulled the male end of the connector out and cleaned it, put it back, still the same issue. I can squeeze it and the low comes on, even the high beam will come and go when I move it the right way. So, maybe time to get a new one. Love it when this stuff happens while it is listed for sale!!

Wow... The same exact thing happened to me this morning! I was cleaning connectors last night, and that was one of them. As I rode to work this morning, the headlight indicator came on! As I pulled up to the office, the indicator went off, and the headlight was fine again. Went home at lunch, and the same thing happened, except the indicator stayed on. After removing the headlight and testing it (it was fine), I re-installed it, and wiggled one wire at a time, trying to find a loose connection. Turned out to be that black one! I'm gonna do some extra cleaning on that plug, then squeeze the female "tubes" a bit to tighten them up a bit.

If only... mine melted and ruined the hole in the plastic shell so I couldn't just buy a couple of new connectors from Geezer.

I had to consult with Walt Disney engineering and ended up using a spade terminal wrapped in electrical tape then tucked it up next to the ignition coils.

That's what happened to me, too, along with the occasional dim low beam.

Using thick wires to feed skinny wires that power a Light Emitting Resistor, then splitting them all with open connectors really isn't a very bright idea. Even if it did appear to last 30 years, the problem was probably there at various times for the last 29 11/12 years before it got bad enough to track down and fix.

Let it sit for 30-40 minutes and your back to normal, cranks right over.

Checked the alternator, not running battery, before running battery is 12.4 V While running at idle about 13V at 3-4k rpm about 14V. So the alternator is running and doing its job.

I'm thinking the starter motor is going bad.
I'm having the same exact problem with my 11. It'll start up on the first press when it's 10 degrees outside. But if I am out riding and stop for gas, I have to sit and wait 30 minutes to get it started again. I'm ending up drinking more cups of coffee waiting for the thing to cool off and start than i really need (which means a future shut off while the coffee does its worst).

Anyways, I don't have a donor starter to swap out for the dying one. Do you guys think this rebuild kit is legit? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CB450...ltDomainQ5f100

              Thanks John,

Lets just say that I am riding now and then and we are talking in between those times. I think she is slowly coming around to it. But then I did not have to take call telling me that she is stable but I need to get to the hospital. So I do not blame her for the concern.

Just for grins, double check the ground between the engine and the frame, when I had the same symptoms I found that the ground strap between the engine and the frame was not working, and the only ground between the engine and frame was the exhaust system, which didn't work as well when hot. Actually found out that mine was missing. Replacing it totally solve the problem on mine.

If in doubt, just run a strap from under one of the bolts on the starter to a bolt on the frame somewhere and make sure the connecting point is nice and clean, you might be surprised.

That rebuild kit is legit, I've used it. Be sure when you rebuild it that you clean the brush holder plate where it touches the starter body, and the rear bearing plate, that is the only internal ground connection for the starter. The other place to clean really well is the surfaces on the motor where the rear bearing plate bolts on, That is the only external ground connection for the starter. And make sure the two long bolts that hold the starter together are tight. +1 on what Cy wrote, an extra ground cable between the rear plate and ground is the ticket. BTDT too.

Mine does that, and the tendency is to crank it until the battery dies. It must be some sort of excess draw by the starter when it is too hot.

I've been in the back country and stalled out at a climbing stop and she "chugg...chugg...chuggs" until it catches (usually) or doesn't, and drains the battery. On the plus side, she push starts right up, so I only gas up at elevated stations with steep driveways in the summer.
