    engine parts and restore question

Ok, I need to replace the middle head gasket on my '83 1100. I am leaking oil out through it. I went to the local dealer and they tell me that yamaha doesn't carry it anymore. Does anyone know of a website where I can find it?
Second question comes into affect over this winter when I plan to restore my bike. I was thinking of adding some color to my engine. Question is, If i paint the heads, (with engine paint , of course) , will it effect the cooling of my engine very much.

Middle head gasket? Solo head gaskets aren't seen too frequently, but complete engine gasket sets are available on ebay for around $90. I live in Texas, and I painted my engine black many years ago, and I have had no heating problems.

The only places on the engine the you need am actual gasket is the head gasket (in-between the head and the top of the cylinders) every other mating surface you can use silicone gasket maker. If your talking about the area between the case and the bottom of the cylinders I would suggest using an anerobic gasket sealer just so that you have as much time as needed to get the jugs back on over the piston.

nat, the gasket i need is the one located in the middle of the cylinder heads. where the top piece mates with the bottom piece. not where it mates on to the engine its self.

Bike Bandit still lists the OEM head gasket as available individually, but it's a bit pricey.... $167 !!!

They'll sell you a complete aftermarket set for under $100, and you can find them elsewhere for slightly less (PartsNMore, EBay).

I'm not aware of any sellers of separate aftermarket gaskets; they're all 'sets'...

Are you talking about the small head gasket that goes around the cam chain port. If so I remember reading that Yamaha no longer uses that gasket. The replacement head gaskets are modified and are all you need. If I am wrong somebody please correct me.

If your bike is an XJ1100 Maxim, you need the head gasket with the YICS ports, unless you plan on blocking them off. Also, you might want to make sure it isn't just your cam chain tensioner or valve cover leaking, blowing up around the head gasket.
