  • Main Switch (ignition) issue

    1980 XS1100G
I think I have narrowed down my starting issue. On a previous post I stated the starter would spin but no spark. I traced and ohm'd all components in the ignition path and all is good. Did not check main switch or stater button.

With the key on and starter button depressed the engine starts. Starter button still depressed, turn key off engine stops but starter still spins. Release button and starter stops.

What do I need to look for in the ignition, starter, kill switch path?

Sounds like either a sticky starter button or a sticky solenoid to me. Not sure, but I think once the starter button pulls the circuit in, it can stay pulled until it is released, evne if you remove the key power.

I know if the solenoid sticks in the closed position, it will continue to power the starter no matter what unless you disconnect the battery. To see this for sure, go out and jumper across the big leads on the solenoid with the key off and even the main fuse pulled. The starter will turn.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

QRFan had the same problem last week - but she didn't have to hold the switch down - it did it itself. Wound up being a grungy starter button. If it's exhibiting that kind of problem it might be a good idea to take the switch apart and clean it.

I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I had to check this one for myself!

With the key on, starter button pressed, the engine starts. But, when you keep the starter button pressed and turn the key off, the starter should stop too! The power to the starter should be cut off by turning off the key. You have something sticking or shorting somewhere in that circuit.

Try taking the right handlebar unit apart and cleaning all the contacts, then take the ignition switch apart and do the same (there's a write-up about that somewhere around here, and it's actually pretty easy). You'll be amazed at how much gunk gets into that ignition switch! Also check for arcs in the connectors/wires where these two units plug into the wiring harness.

Cleaned the contact surfaces at the starter button & the kill switch. 30yrs of oxidation can prevent electricity from flowing. That seems to have done the trick and the bike starts normal.
