  • U-Joint replacement

Does anyone on the forum have any tips for replacing the U-Joint? I have picked up some vibration while under hard acceleration and after letting off the power at higher speeds. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks for your time,
    Big Pat

Are you sure it's the u-joint? My experience with failed u-joints has been limited to cars, but usually they emit a loud clunk when either accelerating or decelerating.

As for replacing them, not too difficult. Drain and remove the middle gear box per the manuals instructions and then pry the yoke off the end of the drive shaft with 2 large screwdrivers for leverage. There is a large clip that fits into a groove to hold the bearing ends into the yoke. The difficult part will be to find a replacement u-joint.

Down here in NZ I got a replacement universal joint from a car suspension shop. Cost $40. Yamaha replacement part cost about $1000,000. When you fit it, it has to be absolutly perfectly lined up right. Also if it has a grease nipple, you'll have to unscrew it and plug the hole. ( the grease nipple doesn't have enough clearance on the swingarm)
