Upgrading the fuse box on my 82 with the newer type ATO fuses. The electrical connection box in the left of the pic - what's it for? I don't think it's the main fuse because I wired it to the new fuse box and it popped fuses.
That's the accessory block. Since you're upgrading the fuse block, you can either leave it in there for looks, or remove it entirely. Either way, you don't need it for anything.

I believe the XJ is the same as the LH in this regard, but I won't guarantee it. Start by looking for a rubber-encapsulated fuse on the left side of the bike, just under the edge of the seat, just forward of the battery. It'll be under the left side cover. It will have 2 red wires connected to it. You can just cut the 2 red wires where they connect to the fuse (inside the rubber capsule), and re-wire them into the new fuse block. It's a 30A fuse.

That little accessory block can come in real handy - like for connecting a timing light or other 12v devices. TC recently mentioned a way to wire the acc block into a new fuse block. You usually wind up with a space or two open on the spade type blocks, which provides a convenient place to wire it. JAT
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
