I finally finished rebuilding my XJ11 and have it on the road.
At this point I have a few questions. I'm not sure if most of my "concerns" are because I'm used to riding my XJ650.
1. At any point when I have the clutch engaged and slowing down there's a whine - the first time I heard it I looked around to see if a police car had their siren on.
2. When accelerating hard, getting into the next gear can be rough. Example: when accelerating through the gears, I get chatter trying to get it to shift into the next gear.
I don't have any experience with clutch issues, but it seems to not want to shift from 4th to 5th with the throttle completely off and the clutch disengaged.. clutch drag?
Everything feels good at low speed going from 1st to 2nd.
When going from 2nd to 3rd when accelerating seems to be easy to find yourself between gears.
For full disclosure, I didn't do any gear fixes and when everything was apart everything was in good shape.
3. When downshifting coming to a stop, it feels like I've shifted back down to 1st, but found myself trying to take off in 2nd. It feels like the only way I can make sure I'm in 1st is if I continually try to downshift.
4. I don't have any turn signals at the moment. My flasher relay disappeared during the rebuild when we swapped out the wiring harness. Anyone have any suggestions on a 2-prong automotive flasher to use instead? Hopefully I'll find the original at some point.
Things I still need to address:
- Somehow I think we missed the gasket on the right side cover. I have a small oil leak there and have that gasket left over
- The softer fuel lines I used tend to kink easily - I put springs around them at the petcocks to keep their shape, but found another area was kinked this morning when I took it out around the neighborhood.
- Clean up all the chrome and rust and touch up the paint
- Re-connect the brake level switch and fuel sender unit
- Get turn signals working
- Swap out the inline glass fuses with TC's fuse box
Overall the bike feels good and I'm happy with the end product
