  • Got it running

Well I got it running this evening. However, I have to admitt I'm stumped. It rev really high and if I give it some gas it stays at the high rpm. Help?

    Hey there Teck,

I read where you did a breadstick tie synch, so aside from the idle screw turned to high(it's the big thumb screw in between #2 and 3 carbs), also the throttle cable sticking, catching, hanging up. Also a bad vacuum leak somewhere, intake boots, other hoses? Do some searches here on synching, high idles, etc., you'll find lots of info!

Did you pull one of the other Main "screws" out and compare it with the new one to be sure it was the same type/style, same # of holes and positions, etc?? Congrats on getting it fixed and somewhat running, you're almost there!!!!!!

A lean condition can cause the idle to hang. Happened on my 2000 Triumph.

        Carb slides may need polishing.

Have you set your idle mixture yet?

Setting the mixture screws on mine did the trick. 2 1/4 turns out from seated was best for me. At the stock setting it would idle fine untill I revved it and then it would take FOREVER to come back down. Did that and it stopped. Funny thing is now my speedo does about the same thing........... sorta like it caught a virus from sitting to close to its best friend the tach.

As all handwringers and tree huggers will tell you, when tweaking the idle screws anticlockwise, you will be commiting an extreme criminal offence. You will have 2 options available to you.

Option 1. - Hire a $10,000 a day lawyer to prepare a bulletproof defence for you, and to witness and record the turning of the screw. Also hope and pray the judge and jury at the court case are all motorcyclists.

Option 2. - Commit this outragous offence in a secretive and hidden location, then strongly deny all knowledge that the event took place. You may also need to destroy the incriminating screwdriver that was used.

Be warned - if you choose option 2, you will have to live with a guilty concience for the rest of your life. Good luck with your mission. Please run a shredding program over this message 10 times. Thank you.

Things seem to be getting better

Spent a better part of the afternoon working on my bike and seem to have won a couple of battles. Starts, seems to run smooth at idle, I have the idle set at 1100 RPMs. Went for a long ride. The bike seem to have a lot more pep to her.

The only question remaining is, what feels like a bubble in the system, (perhaps a miss or high rpm sync problem) around 100 Km/hr (60 mph). When the bike begins to idle down I get a very mild, what sounds like a backfire from the mufflers. No big bangs as of yet but these soft pops are much more frequent than before.

Once again I would like to thank-you all for the great ideas. It's been a big help. (I have no mechanical skills at all)
