  • Quiet exhaust?

I have been doing quite a bit of reading and research on exhaust for these bikes. Jardine, Kerker, MAC, who makes the quietest and who makes the loudest? I want as close to stock appearance as I can get. Thanks

Don't know about noise level but you could always get the replacement muffs from mikesxs and use those. They look stock but aren't.

Good luck in finding those exhausts as Dennis Kirk used to sell Kerker and Mac but they were expensive last time i checked and not sure if they still carry them. And the Kerker i have is not quiet either, not loud but not quiet.Once in awhile they come up on E Bay but again wont be cheap.

If it's quiet you are looking for, I have some stock Harley takeoffs on mine and they are quieter than the intake noise. They look cool and 60s retro-like too.

          As close to stock???

            Harley takeoffs

Nice thing about thos Harley takeoffs are that they are cheap, new and quiet. No need for rejetting either and most Harley dealers have a room full of them and actually give them away. I like mine which cost me $10 and everyone says they sound nice. Only slightly louder than stock and I can hear the intake too.

I might have to look at picking up a set of Hardley pipes this winter. Seeing I live in the hardley capital they should be easy to get ahold of!

                harley muffs

Make sure when you get the harley muffs they are the right ones. Planedick is right, they sound great, better than stock and no need to rejet. You do lose a slight amount of low end torque, but after the revs and speed climb up you wont notice the difference. The right muffs to get are the fxd, softail, dyna muffs from about 1999 to present. They have a 1 3/4" entrance which is exactly what you need from the xs cutoff, in front of the crossover, needs to be. There is a link in the forums. Buy two 1 3/4 ID, by 1 3/4 od connector at your local auto store, a couple of harley clamps for each side, and in 30 minutes youre ready to ride. I put a set on one of my 1100's and the sound is great, plus more of a roadster look than the big stock megaphone look. Contact Planedick for the exact mufler number needed. "loud" is a realative term and it may be my issue here. However I did the HD muff swap. They are great, they added a bit of low end power and fit like a dream. However I wouldn't consider them quiet... They are much quieter than a lot of other options and when you're just running down the road you hear the wind more than the pipes but when you twist on the gas a bit there is no doubt from anyone around you that you're on the gas.

All that being said, HD swap is by far the best bang for the buck swap you can get for these bikes.

78 xs11 aftermarket 4-2 HD mufflers, whats left of it is stock. A work in progress for sure.

Its been well documented here that a stock exhaust new is non-existant. There is only one manufacturer that still makes an exhaust for the XS/XJ1100s' and that is MAC. Now I am not aware if they make any other model of exhaust except for the 4 into 1 style. I know they used to make a 2 into1 one each side style but from what I've read here that style is currently unavailable. A new Mac 4 into 1 will cost you $360 give or take $10-20. If you want a used but good condition MAC, I have one forsale. PM me for further details.

True, sort of.... There are some options, but they are BIG BUCKS!!! there is a German manufacturer that does make replicas of the XS exhaust http://www.xs1100-frw.de/HOMEPAGE_03/Index2.htm (click on XS-Shop on the side bar then click on the first picture in the list) Its a stainless steel replica and I think last time I heard it was something like 900 pounds to buy shipping extra (and stainless aint light!)

There is also the Campell X-Pipe http://www.x-pipe.com/motorcycle.html they dont list it on the website but they do exist from what I understand. Also not cheap!

There is also the Marshal Deeptones (http://www.laserexhausts.com/Home.aspx) most people dont seem to have much good to say about them though, they look pretty decent though.

Then there is a whole slew of european exhaust available apparently but they are not really available to US people apparently.

Someone else might knew more than I do about this so dont quote me on any of this

I've got a Jardine 4/1 on mine, and it's relatively quiet if I keep the rpms down, but it'll get pretty loud with a twist of the throttle. Personally I like the exhaust to be a bit on the loud side - reduces the incidence of cars changing lanes into you. I truly believe you're safer on a bike with an exhaust that lets people know you are there. Just sayin...
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I actually ended up with two sets when I bought mine. The spare set is for sale for $50. That's what I gave for it on fleabay.
