It is part of the plastic in the same fashion that gel coat is to fiberglass. The fuel tank, and yes, the steel seat rails are painted with pin stripping sealed under a clear coat on both the rails and fuel tank.

Interesting... Here's what mine looked like. The parts pictured I bought off ebay. This is just after wet sanding prior to sealing them. The one cover I sanded a bit more to remove a small scratch. They seemed original to me but I don't know what model year they are from. If macho maroon was only offered in 78 then that's what they are. Mine were painted, I'd guess a grey plastic, a tinted sealer followed by the maroon. They had lots of maroon over-spray on the inside surface.

Thanks for pointers on the striping!

Yep, that's Macho Maroon. The grey had me puzzled until I looked at my spare parts; the original plastic is a light grey except where it's been 'exposed' (i.e. unpainted) and there it's faded to an off-white color with a yellow tint. No doubt the effects of age.

But my '79 bits are painted the same as the '78 parts, just the different color. It's certainly not molded into the cover...
