  • Relay bypass

After reading the wiring diagrams, I think that I may have, for testing purposes, found out how to bypass the shut down relay, and side stand relay. Are there any problems with this that I should know about?

This is to be just a testing procedure, and will not be permanent, as I want to restore this bike to original, and I want ALL of the features to work, as per factory spec.

Getting collectors plates will allow me to insure the bike for $260 per year.
    Normal plates will cost $1400.

Collectors tags are way better, as we have variable weather up here.

Any tips for the above mentioned procedure would be quite welcomed, but more importantly, I need to know the things that CAN'T be done!

Make sure you have the kick stand up before you take off !
Be able to turn of the bike while rolling with the key.

Those features are just safety devices. You can bypass the tipover switch (is that what you mean by "Shut down relay"?) by just unplugging it, IIRC. The sidestand switch is just a ground, so you can elimintate that if you like as well. There is also a clutch switch that won't let you start the bike if the engine is in gear and the clutch isn't pulled.

Of all of those, I can see the desire to be able to start the bike with the sidestand down, but why would you want to bypass the other ones? What is the benefit?

The main benefit, for right now is 1) narrowing down where all of the electrical problems reside, by simplifying the system. 2) time.... my local Yamaha shop always has the same answer when I ask for parts for these bikes....."Special Order....Take 3 weeks....must come from Japan!"

Hey Tantor, If you search on here you can find where some folks have ditched the factory harness and narrowed the enitire bike down to very minimal wiring.

Understand your going back to factory, and I can tell you, a side stand switch would have saved me a few pair of undergarments when I leaned the bike to the left and hit against the side stand doing 30-40 MPH. Most times it just brushes the side stand up and you just hear the klink, but sometimes, is stays down and throws the bike back up. Very interesting keeping the bike off the left side, not running off the right side of the road and getting the side stand up all at the same time. All while your seat has now become a permanent addition to your anatomy!! Just thankful it never happened in a curve. So yeah, I wish mine had one.

It generally does, all but twice on me, it just flopped up as I start forward. But let it hit on you at speed a couple times, and your pants get heavier REALLY quick!!!

Over the years I have just gotten in the habit with ANY bike of just getting on the bike, putting the stand up, and THEN doing whatever else I was going to go. Once you get the habit ingrained I have not yet forgotten to put it up every time. It's also the LAST thing I do before I get off (I have forgoten to do that once though).

It helps that with my weight, I can't do much of anything with it down, but it was already a habit before I got to that point.

Lol, not putting the sidestand up before taking off is just plain crazy.

Well, I finally got spark! Starter shutdown relay bypassed, and side stand switch jumped!

When they say that the bike ran when parked, ask them how long ago that was, and why they parked it...

tomorrow, I will try to actually fire it. Wish me a lot of luck!

And yes, when it actually runs, the bypassed parts will be replaced. I want to do a proper restoration on this bike, and that means that everything has to work!
