  • Accel Terminals

One (hopefully) final last question about Accel coils part #140403). I finally got the coils installed thanks to some hep from this site. I then ordered a 90 degree boot and terminal kit from Summit Racing to make the wires come off the distributor at a 90 degrees to allow the wires to clear the valve cover. The part was 170060 Non-HEI Type 90 degree 8.8mm to 9mm Distributor Boot and Terminal Kit, and the tech department at Summit told me that this was the part that I needed.

After I crimped the wires on I found that they did not attach to the coil and would not work. I then called Accel and their tech department (Paul) could not grasp the problem, but said that if I sent them two pictures that they would e-mail me back the solution. That was a week ago, and I have not heard back. The terminals on the coil look kind of like the tips of spark plugs, and the spark plug end of the wires that came with the coils do attach.

Can someone tell me what boot and Terminal kit I need to buy to bring my bike back to life? The wires are the 8.8mm ones that came with the coil. I think the part number is 170061, but I would like to know before I throw more money and riding time out the window.

Any helpful hints on cutting the wires without damaging the core would be appreciated as well.

The left side of the pictures (red boot with silver terminal) came with the coils and fits both the plugs and the coil. The right side of the pictures (black boot with gold terminal) does not attach to the plug of coil.

Might be this one? P/N 170061

The black ones you have look like they are caps for a distributor.

This may seem stupid on my part but are you using spark plugs with the threaded tops or are they smooth like the coil tips?

I think Phil has the reason for the confusion. If you used the term "distributor" with talking to the tech on the phone, or when ordering the boots, that would be the problem. There is no distributor in this equation. Wires go straight from the coils to the plugs.

I am not quite sure what the problem is here. The wires came with plug boots preinstalled (according to the picture of the coil kit). and the kit also came with the red 90 degree boots that are meant to be used on the coils. You said the red boots fit the coils, so what is the problem? Use the black straight connectors on the plugs as intended (or switch out for other plug caps if you want) and then use the red 90 degree boots for the coils as intended. The black boots are for a distributor which usually has a larger post so it will not fit on the coils or the plugs.

              Dave,

Did you get this straightened out? The red caps should work on both ends with no problem. That black boot in your first photo is for a distributor and NOT a coil or pug connection. Needless to say, (as you found out), it won't work on either coil or plug either...

Hopefully, my Accel caps and crimping dies will come in so I change over to custom length right-angle plug ends and get rid of the factory straight ones as well as get a cleaner, stronger crimp on the terminal.

Had a chance to go see a parts /project 78E I have in storage . It has red coils and yellow wire with boots like in the first post pic. It also has the smooth post adapters on the plugs. That's why I asked that first question.
