  • Gas tank ?

Does anyone know if a 1979 special tank will fit on a 1978E without modification?

    Define 'without modification'...

Yes, it will bolt on. You'll have a gap between the seat and the tank, you'll lose your fuel gauge I think, and you'll need matching 'special' petcocks as the standard ones won't fit the tank.

If your current fuel gauge sender works you would be able to flip the sender over and put it in the special tank cause the senders are on opposite sides of the tank.

Now for a proposition. I have a special tank on my standard right now. I want a standard tank. If your standard tank is in decent condition (i.e. usable doesn't have to be perfect) I would trade takes straight up with you. If your interested send me a PM and we can discuss it.

          Hi Jamie,
I doubt that the long arm and float of the Standard fuel sender will have the room to move all the way up once it's inside the Special tank as it has to fit in there backwards to work right?
          Let us know, eh?
