  • Mechanical Governor?

    Hi, All.

I was really trying to run it out in 1st, and it felt like something broke. First, it felt like it popped out of gear, but almost right away, it popped back in gear and gave me a kick in the ass. Everything came back to normal almost instantly, and it happened so fast that I'm not sure what actually happened. I managed to repeat this a couple times... it doesn't feel like the clutch is slipping. It only happens at wide open throttle, high RPM, first gear. Is there a mechanical governor that could be letting go and then grabbing again?

Edit: I've got a bit of a frankenbike... the motor is from an XJ, but the pick-up coil/timing advance assembly is off an '80 XS (vacuum advance under the timing cover, etc.)

    Thanks,
    Brian

Might possibly be the beginning onset of the typical 1st/2nd gear issue. For some reason it tends to show up first in 1st gear on the XJ models. Sounds kind of like that to me. Nothing else seems to make sense. JAT

I thought you were talking about California politics by the thread title!

I agree with DG though. Sounds like the tranny is juuust starting to let loose in 1st gear. You'll probably be fine for a while as long as you don't "rin it out in 1st" anymore. Use it as a Winter project.

My xj will 'grunt' for a moment in first if I get heavy on the throttle, just a momentary slip it seems, not a gear issue I don't think. All this recent clutch talk going on has convinced me to go for spring replacement. Got some ebc springs coming from Ebay. Actually 2 sets shipped for 24.47.

To your question I say no mech gov present.

          Thanks, guys.

I guess I'll have to keep it under 7k in 1st for the rest of the summer. At least second still has lots of torque.
