  • MAC 4-2 Exhaust

    Hey Ya'll... 78 XS11E

    I purchased a new mac 4-2 exhaust system from Dennis kirk last year and just now put it on. (if you're sittin on the bike), the left side is peachy! The right side now completely interfere's with rear brake pedal operation. Did I mess up somewhere and transpose the header pipes or is this a MAJOR screw up with dennis kirk/mac????

    Sometimes when installing ANY aftermarket exhaust..... you either have to do a little minor "tweaking" to the exhaust or shim or bend the brake pedal for a little more clearance. I had to put a slight bend in my brake pedal to clear the exhaust after only putting on Jardine slipon mufflers. The way the new mufflers lined up... it pulled the exhaust pipes out a little further than stock. Though... I think I could have also modified the brackets a bit to bring them inward and down a little more. I may end up doing this anyway since the axle end on the left side touches the muffler when there is no load on the bike. I am afraid that if I leave it alone... it will eventually scrub the chrome and start rusting.

      Seems like a lot of work, even after spending a lot of hard earned money. I called Dennis Kirk Tech support last night and the gentlemen I spoke with was supportive but offered no real help other than an 800 number for MAC which I called and left a message last night I'm going to see what they say.

      I'm not really liking the 4-2. I knew I shoulda went with the 4-1. Wonder if I can make a trade with them. Ha ha......

        that totally sucks. let us know what happens. Mines starting to rust out and if it's not complete bolt on then I don't want it

          You ain't kiddin Bud.....

          It does suck. If the head pipes were (moreorless) hoseclapmped to the collector pipe as was the old set that was on the bike originally (I believe it was an old Jardine 4-2 setup) I could adjust it out of the way of the brake pedal, but since the header pipes are welded into the collector there is no room for adjusting, unless I cut 'em, and have it rewelded...YUCK! Then rechromed. Double super secret yuck!

            Don't feel like the lone ranger! I bought the 4-1 Mac and had to do some serious heating and bending to make it look even close to what I wanted. Then I learned to like it more and more. Kind'a like a new pair of shoes, weird at first untill you got used to 'em. I did keep my center stand intact tho. I'm thrilled that Mac produces XS1100 headers, I just wish they would make 'em fit a little nicer.

              Well, one thing I didn't think to do first was make sure I had them adjusted. I didn't, so I did that. I can now use the rear brakes, but it still does hit the collector pipe. Not sure if it's enough movement to actually lock the brakes up if I had to.

              I did take my bike out for it's first 'work out the bugs' run today after it sitting for 9 months. One thing I did was do away with the airbox and installed individual air filters. Apparently, the previous owner never rejetted the bike for whatever reason, because when I would open the throttle up and then throttle down, the bike would lunge forward. Now with the round filters, the bike runs much more smoothly. I did attempt a small whole shot in my parking lot and damn near had the front wheel off the ground, while leaving a small, 6' long patch of rear tire rubber. BIG F'N GRIN!!! Seems as though my motor was a little starved for air. Who knew! My bike has never been able to do that. Maybe with some tweaking I can achieve a happy medium of power and comfort.

              It doesn't seem to need rejetting because the rpms are smooth with no backfiring. Although I haven't 'read' the plugs today so I'm not exactly sure what's happenin on the inside.

              I've actually thought about trying to locate a local custom exhaust man and see what I can come up with as far as 4-1. Quick side thought: What if there was a crossover for all four pipes. Would that help the exhaust?

              Oh well....enough with the banter. Time to go floss the cat, and then it's off to my Millard Fillmore support group. LMAO
