When I first filled the plastic jar with the float already in it, the meniscus that formed above the edge of the jar had to be well over 1/8", and it kept bulging as I added water drop by drop. That's why I tried to strike off the bulge and get it to be level visually with the rim.
I'm thinking maybe just repeating the process a number of times would give a more reliable measure. Hey, that sounds like something I heard 40 or so years ago in high school science class. Now, was that physics or chemistry class?
