Clockwise will lean the mixture, closing the fuel valve so to speak. Counterclockwise is opening it up.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The idle mixture (or pilot jet) screws are fuel bleed screws, just like a faucet, clockwise to close off the fuel or lean it out, ccw to richen.'78 E "Stormbringer"

don and mike, thanks a bunch!!! don, how's rehab coming? haven't talked to you in awhile. got the carbs running, and had a little problem with the starter...prolly going to replace that, took it out and it isn't broken, just doesn't want to work all the time....i know the manual says not to mess with the mixture screw, but i took the carbs apart, and it is still running WAY WAY too rich, so here goes nothing....i hope....1980 XS 1100 Special (working to be my daily ride)

Rehab is coming along great. I'm about 90% back to before accident condition I'd say. Interestingly, got to go back to the ER this week for a kidney stone, I blame it on all the calcium tabs they had me taking!!
As to the carbs, they were set at the factory for the emissions requirements of the day, no worries changing those now. A typical setting is about 2 turns out or counterclockwise from bottomed out.
I have the starter off Thunderstruck if you need one, pm me and we can work out the details. First though, have you confirmed it is not the starter solenoid, or the starter button? If it is intermittent, it is most likely one of those two rather than the starter motor itself.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

In the main forum area, pick the forum you want to post in like this XS11/XJ11 Discussion. At the top of the list of threads, you should see a "new Thread" button. Use that. You have to give the thread a title for it to post.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

yeah....it's the starter. i had smoke rolling out of the thing after i was trying to get it started after i worked on the carbs a bit. i guess the starter was stuck on or something and just kept spinning....the whole bike was hot. it works now, doesn't stick, but thinking i still need to replace it before it sticks again and i get stuck somewhere. don, i might have a line on one but if that falls through, i'll pm you and let you know. thanks so much for all of the help and the info!!!!1980 XS 1100 Special (working to be my daily ride)
