Is there anything, other than float problems, that could cause this?My #1 cyl is running way to rich, sooty rich. I was having a small rich problem with my #4 carb and switched jets, float valves(installed new needles) and floats between #1 and #4. The fuel height checked OK in #1, using the tubing check while the bike was running but after riding for 20 minutes it started running poorly at, and just off, idle. I checked the plugs this morning and found #1 to be sooty. The float fuel height checked OK this morning too. I guess if the float could be sticking intermittantly but it looks OK.

Hi Bill
Since you've managed to move the problem from #4 to #1, you know it is in the components you moved, ie, not an air passage in the carb body, not spark.
What I would do is swap the components back out one at a time, starting with the float valves, until the prob moves back to #4.Mike * Seattle * 82 F'n'XJ1100 *

Yey, I'll play around with it today. I want to get it ready to ride to Oak Ridge, TN on Friday for the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club national rally this weekend.

I pulled the carbs and changed the pilot jets, main jets and mixture screws back to their original carbs and had it running in 75 minutes. I have no idea what was wrong but it runs great now. I haven't checked the plugs yet, but I have a feeling that they are going to look OK.Bill Murrin
