  • Plug Pondering??

    Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone has switched to "hotter" spark plugs in Winter and back to "cooler" ones for Summer?
I have been running only NGK bp6es plugs year 'round in my 79 XS1100f. While it is now August here in Northern California...we still have some very warm days. Nights and mornings are much cooler, so I just run the same plugs. Has anyone ever switched plugs fo "season" changes? If so, did you notice any change in fuel use or performance?

I dont think you should have to switch plugs. Maybe if it got below freezing you could but I dont think you have that problem all that much in Cali

i messed around with different heat ranges a little while ago,
with a hotter plug 'bp5es' the engine knocked
around 4000rpm under load and sounded noisier,
the colder i went the smoother and quieter
the engine ran but noticed it lost a bit of power under load,
i found that stock was best might try running bp7es in summer
        once the weather heats up.

The stock-spec heat range is best for 99% of riding in 'normal' temps. I suppose that if riding in 100+ F temps a swap to a colder plug may reduce engine temp a bit, but the motor will be slow to warm up and run properly, as well as being more prone to fouling. Unless you're riding in sub-zero weather, the only reason to use hotter plugs would be if you have a serious oil-burner; a hotter plug will go a bit further before fouling...
