Welcome to the forum! Your question is one that has been asked by many folks here, and though information floating around the 'net says that only 250 were made each of the 2 years, the Serial numbers that have been collected here almost undeniably make that impossible. It's obvious they were made in limited numbers, but definitely in the thousands.1980 XS850SG - Sold
1981 XS1100LH Midnight Special (Sold) - purchased 9/29/08
Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.
Here's my web page devoted to my bike! XS/XJ User's Manuals there, and the XJ1100 Service Manual and both XS1100 Service manuals (free download!).

Thanks for your reply. I tried to edit my post to include an introduction but it didn't work? So I will post an introduction after this reply. Anyway thousands sounds more like the actual figure. Is there a registry somewhere to log mine in?1980 XS1100G = Current Project - 1980 XS1100LG = Dormant

Serial numbers on 'special edition' models usually don't mean much unless they were all built in a continous 'batch', which is rarely the case; they're generally mixed in with 'standard' models. The only way to be sure is if the model has a separate 'special' number, such as a plaque.
As to value, 'cosmetic' or 'trim' upgrades are seldom worth more than about $50-100 over their more common brothers if both are in the same condition, and if any of the special parts/trim are missing, the value will be about the same. There's always the exception if you find the right buyer, but buying as an 'investment' won't pay as a rule. If the 'upgrades' were performance items, then you have a much better chance of seeing appreciation...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
