  • #2 and #3 still arent firing!!!! plz help

my problem is that #2 and #3 are still not firing.

i have bought new, correct dyna coils, spark plugs, spark plug caps, spark plug wires. i know they are installed correctly because when i switch (mismatch) the connectors between the left and right ignition coils, the right does fire (spark) (ive been doing the ole screwdriver spark check test). so ive deducted that the problem is in the wires to the cdi box or the cdi box. before i take the cdi box apart to look for solder breaks, did i eliminate the pick-up coils from being the problem since the switching manuver with the ignition coil connectors worked? anyone had similar problems?

    thanks

If I read your post correctly, your saying that the left coil initially fires, then switching the wires the alternate or right coil fires. All you have eliminated is the coils themselves in that case. Everything from the wires back is still suspect including connections, TCI, and Pickup coils.

If it were me, being a cheap guy, I would look at the wire connectors first, clean all of them at the TCI and the coils and all the grounds good. Then I would look into the pickup coils. First try checking for continuity from the connector to the actual coil to see if a wire is broken.

2&3 is an electrical problem. Use a Volt-Ohm meter and check the wires at the TCI box. You should have one connector with 4 wires, that is the one to check. I'm at work, so I don't have a manual handy but it should be about 300 to 500Ohm of resistance between the top two wires and the same for the bottom two. (this is if my memory isn't fried. it may be top/bottom left and right) If you have the same resistance on both pair of wires, the pickup coils SHOULD be OK.
Next remove the six screws holding the cover on the TCI and look at the end with the connectors. Try to take a soldering iron and heat up each solder joint to just melt the solder. If needed, you can put just a little more solder on each joint. That is the "normal" fix for a TCI.
The best way to check though is if you have someone close by with a spare TCI you can use. Then just unplug yours and plug in the spare. You don't need to bolt down the test TCI, just plug it in.

I believe that is something more like 740 ohm....

i checked both pairs and got 774 ohm on one pair and 777 on the other. thanks for that correction on the ohmage also. so i guess the pickups are good so thats a relief. i opened up the ignition module box/tci/cdi and the top of the solders looked brand new as if the box had never been opened. i tried to figure how to take out the circuit board out but it would come out due to the front prongs holding it in. any other wires that i need to check?

When you check the pickups you need to unclamp the wires and pull on then down under the left side engine cover. The wires usually break but they still make contact sometimes. pull on the wires and see if they stretch. if they do they are bad and you need to fix the wires.
