Navy, I'm still new to the XS11 but my first bike was a XJ750 and I had the same problem that you are having. After doing some testing I found that the tachometer had shorted and grounded out the wire going to the coil feeding #2 and #3. I don't know if the XS is setup the same way as my XJ was but it is something to look at.

Just for general info, the tach on the XS is driven off the alternator and isn't connected to the ignition system at all. The tach reads frequency and converts it to RPM.

thanks everyone. as stated in the previous message by someone, the 81 doesnt have a ballast resistor. ill recheck the wires and the pick-up wires in the different ways told to me from you all.

also, i have tested the pick-up coils by checking the two pairs of wires on the smaller connector going to the TCI box. i got a reading of 723 ohm on one pair and 725 ohm on the other pair. does this eliminate the pickup coils from being the problem?

Yep, that's a good reading, so the pickups seem to be good. But try reading them again, while moving the timing plate; if the numbers move much at all, you have bad wires, so start pulling/stretching the pickup wires to find the break. This is a very common problem (one of mine broke at 8k miles) and can give all sorts of weird symtoms...

Less common on the 81 as the timing plate doesnt move like the earlier models . The advance is built into the 4RO TCI

I thought these still have the vacuum advance?

They do, and I thing your right, the part of the system that actually stresses the wires is the backing plate changing position under influence of the vacuum advance. The centrifugal advance only moves the reluctor on the end of the crankshaft in relation to the pickups, the vacuum moves the pickups.

does anyone know where i can find a new aftermarket cdi box/ignition module for a 1981 xs1100 special??
Before you buy a CDI, you might try Randy Rago's quick TCI test. That will tell you pretty quick if the TCI is bad. If it is, DGXSER might still have the 4R0 TCI off the bike he totalled earlier this year. Might be worth a PM.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Sorry , I spoke before I checked about the vac advance . I thot the 81 was similiar to my XJ .
I used a 4RO TCI in my bike for a while and may be why I was confused (this time) .
