Nah, it's not just America, really, it's a growing global hobby making small cars and other weird, entertaining projects with motorcycle engines and, as Steve wrote, they've already moved on to other engines anyway now that the XS parts stock has, for most people, been cored, hollowed out and shelled by the motorcycle riders' equivalent of pikey termites.

Since it's already happened to most of the world and too many common rebuild parts are no longer available for the XS anywhere at any price it's good to know that your racing buddy will help you out and hook you up with the O.E.M. parts you need and you prefer when you need to work on your XS.

You sound mad at not finding parts for your XS? Do you look at all on the internet? Tell me why you are so mad at not finding a part and I will send you a link to that that part ( I most likely have it myself, rods, mains, even OEM hand grips and almost anything else you might need? I rebuilt one a while back including all gaskets, rings, rods, mains, clutch, carb kits, intake manafolds? I cant think of a jap bike that has more parts adv. after 30+ years then these. Have anouther beer and ask a friend to look for your parts.

Nah, I'm not mad and I don't need parts, I'm on my way up north in a few minutes to get another couple of bikes, one XS. I was congratulating you for having a buddy that races the XS engines because he should be able to hook you up with O.E.M. parts when you need them.

You're right: I don't like what the sprint racers and others did to the parts stream one little bit (can you tell without me adding a stupid smiley face?) but it hasn't really affected me, personally. I did a quick re-ring and changed the bearings in my engine and it runs fine but I won't be rebuilding it: dump it when it wears out and needs pistons, buy a used engine and run it until it wears out; cheer and have a beer when a mini-racer using an XS11 engine loses a race.

For what it's worth I don't really like pod filters, either, and it takes me less than ten minutes to R&R the carburetors on my bike with the stock airbox so the 'ease of removal and replacement' is not something I need to worry about. I just don't like the intake noise from pod filters and I don't want to re-tune the carburetors.

The pods do look really cool, especially if you buy some of the custom pods at Mike's XS for the XS650s. All you have to do is treat Mike like a complete idiot and ignore his explicit written requests to only do business for XS650s to get whatever you want.

          Parts

The good news is Yamaha made so many of these, stupid smilly face I am finding many are parting them out (even nice running complet bikes, and some MNS) I don't agree with some of that just to make a $ but I respect their haveing the freedom to do as they chose, hope we all keep that freedom forever

Back to the thread, I've got pods on my '78 and it runs like a scared rabbit.Tuning doen't seem to have given me issues once I got my head around this beast and the needed tools. I was of course kinda forced to go pod filters as the PO had mutilated the box in an aborted atempt at 'drilling' it.
Finding a new box seemed like alot of trouble and expense after my first experience with carb removal with a box that had been rendered useless as a filter for intake air by a PO. Just my input. RIDE!

              Great!

Mike, that is great! Glad your bike is running great, enjoy! P.S. You can find the stock air box on ebay for $20 or so if you ever want to change back, just make sure it is the right year or you can mod carb hook ups.
