  • Jugs!

    So I am trying to pull the jugs and I just cannot get them off! Is there a trick to it? I have been beating the thing with a rubber mallet and trying to pry up on the little spots where it says you can pry and it will not move.

    Take a look along the front.
    Studs are exposed in places and like to collect tar, sand and small boulders.

    If this is your case then pick and scrape what you can out.
    Then soak the rest with something to soften the tar stuff.
    (I use a diesel/oil mix and keep it "wet" for a few days)
    Clean out what you can then pry.

    If you get it started then can use some wooden wedges to get it to move up a little, cut out the gasket if it's stuck to both the cylinders and top of case.
    (putty knife will work)

    If you can get them up a half inch or so then you can move the cylinders up and down to loosen and then remove most of the cra ... stuff around the studs.

    Since I've fought a few off, I came across a neat pry bar that just fits nicely and gives a lot of leverage. With that bar I’ve removed the cylinders from a couple very stuck up ones in less than an hour and un-gunked up ones come right off.

          Fits the dead center on reinforced spot on cylinders
          and just short enough that works well while engine is in the frame.

            i used pb blaster, in each of the stud holes, and a 50/50 mix of automatic transmission fluid/acetone. let that soak for a few days, and then wail on it with the rubber mallet, and pry as stated before.

              Puller trick

              Some time ago I did a story with pics of a device I made to use the studs to lift the jugs off, but I can't find it now. Maybe my search wasn' worded right because I don't remember what the thread title was. I think I'm beginnig to exhibit signs of old age. Can't remember much anymore.

                  I just did this myself on an engine I am parting out. Granted, this engine only had 29,000 on the clock and was garage kept all its life.

                  I used PB Blaster and the like on the edges all the way around the cylinders, and plenty down each stud hole. Let it soak for a day or two with repeated sprays of blaster down the holes. Then, I started with a regular flat bar. USed a hammer to lightly drive it into the slot where the pry point is on one side, and used pressure and a 2 pnd sledge on the end of the bar and the jugs popped off pretty quickly really. I'd say I spent more time getting them to slide off the studs than getting them loose.
